I always liked that odd-looking rear engine pusher biplane from WW1. One of the longest dogfights of the war was between Lanoe Hawker ( flying alone on a scouting mission ) against Baron von Richthofen. Lanoe had to jump into the front to use his guns.....and then back into the cockpit to change directions and to try to race back to the safety of the British lines. Almost home after a 15 minute battle in this very slow machine he finally took a single bullet and crashed.
Interesting note ; a long time later I was reading another book about trench warfare and came across a short description of two soldiers watching a German plane repeatedly diving on a slow FE2b that dodged and darted for about 15 minutes avoiding the attacks. One on the soldiers in the trench was hit in the foot and retired back to England as a result.
